A Florida man was jailed Wednesday on bomb hoax charges after he allegedly told airport security he had a bomb in his backpack, prompting officials to shut down Jacksonville International Airport for five hours Tuesday.
Zeljko Causevic, 39, was arrested by airport police and charged with filing a false report about planting a bomb or explosive and with the manufacture or possession of a hoax bomb, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
The arrest report says Causevic, who lives in Jacksonville, approached an airport security screener Tuesday evening and said, "I got a bomb in here," referring to his camouflage backpack, the Florida Times-Union reports.
He then said the device was "supposed to be a bomb, but it's not," according to the arrest report.
Security officers who examined the backpack found a luggage scale with two flat round batteries and a microchip inside, the arrest report said. They also found a cellular phone, and a remote-control device that Causevic allegedly described as a detonator.
The airport, which was shut down for five hours, was reopened shortly before midnight Tuesday.
Airport Public Information Officer Michael Stewart said that at least five flights were canceled Wednesday because planes that normally would have been brought in on Tuesday evening were not available.
