Randy Travis' loved ones are hoping for the best.
The ailing country crooner is out of the operating room after undergoing emergency surgery Wednesday following a stroke he suffered due to complications from a heart condition.
Per USA Today, Travis' rep confirmed that the singer is out of surgery but remains in critical condition.
Travis, 54, underwent the procedure in order to relieve pressure on his brain as a result of the stroke.
On Sunday, the star was rushed to Baylor Medical Center in McKinney, Texas, after suffering complications from viral cardiomyopathy, a disease that weakens the heart muscle and can lead to heart failure.
"His family and friends here with him at the hospital request your prayers and support," Travis' rep said in a statement prior to the singer's surgery.
Earlier on Wednesday, in a video released by Travis' camp, the singer's doctors provided an update on his condition that indicated the country star was on the mend.
Dr. Michael Mack, the physician charged with overseeing Travis' "specialized care," said that the star had "shown signs of improvement."
In a separate statement, Dr. William Gray, director of cardiovascular services at the hospital, told reporters that Travis "had been in previously excellent health until three weeks prior when he developed a viral upper respiratory illness."
After Travis was diagnosed with viral cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure, doctors attempted to stabilize his condition by placing an Impella peripheral left ventricular assist device, an implantable mechanical pump that helps deliver blood from the lower chambers of the heart to the rest of the body.
The singer was ultimately transferred to The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano for more specialized care.
Over the last two years, Travis had nabbed headlines due to a string of alcohol-related arrests.
He was busted for public intoxication in Dallas in February 2012 after authorities found him sitting in a parked car with a bottle of wine inside.
In January of this year, he pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated stemming from an incident in August 2012 in which police officers found him naked after he ran his vehicle off the road.
UPDATED: In a statement released Friday, July 12, Travis' publicist said that he remained "under heavy sedation" since coming out of surgery Wednesday night and was "resting comfortably. He is still in critical condition. His family continues to ask for prayers and support."
